The threat of drink drivers on UK’s roads could be set to increase following the news of police budget cuts.
North Yorkshire Deputy Chief Constable, Adam Briggs has suggested that budget cuts will almost certainly impact on the police’ attempts to crack down further on drink driving offenders that can seriously endanger themselves, other road users and car insurance UK premiums.
Mr Briggs joined other motoring organisations in providing evidence to the Transport Select Committee, which is considering cutting the drink-drive limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg.
Mr Briggs added: "I am not saying that there are not going to be real challenges around this in terms of the financial aspect.
"But I think that the first thing that we should say from an enforcement point of law is ... 'where should the law be and what’s the evidence around it?'."
In addition, Transport Secretary, Phillip Hammond is also believed to be preparing to reject proposals, despite wide-spread public support for a reduction in the drink-drive limit.
