Courtesy of The Independent - there are a number of UK car insurance myths that go around the country, so let's set the record straight:
It states: "a good indication of who is a safer driver can be gleaned from looking at insurance premiums."
This is backed up by statistics from the AA Premium Index who state that the average premium for 17-22 year olds is £2,146 for a male driver and £1,209 for a female driver.
Interestingly, by the time male and female drivers hit their thirties there is very little difference in car insurance premiums, although men still pay more for their cover - Male drivers £578, Female drivers £461.
In a vital attempt to cut costs it is recommend to talk to your insurer about raising the excess on your policy, as raising it by just a mere one or two-hundred pounds could save you a "significant sum."
It sounds simple enough, but by not speeding drivers can also benefit - some providers will issue their customers with 20 percent discounts to those who have not received a speeding ticket in several years.
