UK car insurers and road charities continue to reveal statistics and figures that make the general public sit back with a sharp intake of breath. Young drivers complain about the extortionate premiums that they are hit with, but is the motor industry right to take a tough stance to youngsters and should they be even harsher?
Below is a round-up of some of the latest stories that should leave drivers both worried and scared.
• 25% of young drivers admit to driving without insurance, a license or MOT
Despite the threat of vehicle seizure, six penalty points and a £200 fine, the trend of driving without insurance is a vicious spiral that can be hard for young drivers to get out of when attempting to avoid paying Young car insurance premiums.
• 5% of motorists under 35 admit to ‘crashing for cash’
One in 20 drivers surveyed by Moneysupermarket.com recently admitted to staging an accident in order to claim on their insurance.
• 6% of Motor Policies offering ‘road rage cover’
Insurers are quickly adding a special ‘road rage’ category to their range of benefits, particularly for drivers aged 55 and over. Five years ago just 1% of car insurance policies offered this cover, but this has increased allowing drivers to claim for costs such as professional counselling and even damages following physical assault.
