Car Insurance UK - Oxfordshire Motorists Obeying Speed Restrictions Without Cameras
05/08/2010
Following the demise of speed cameras in the Oxfordshire area, readers may be interested to note that motorists continued to obey speed limits without the presence of speed cameras.
August 1st saw Oxfordshire County Council take the bold move to switch off all speed cameras throughout the county in a bid to rein in council funds, with many sceptics believing that car insurance UK policyholders would not be able to adhere to speed limits knowing they couldn’t be caught speeding by cameras.
However, local newspaper, the Banbury Cake, reported that after an independent investigation at two locations on Monday 2nd August, only 15 drivers out of 840 exceeded the 30mph speed limit.
According to the newspaper none of the 15 drivers who were caught driving over the 30mph limit would have incurred penalties from speed cameras as none exceeded 35mph.
Chief inspector for Thames Valley Police, Gill Wooton, said: "The majority of drivers do stick to the speed limit for the road they are travelling on."
It is thought that a number of other counties, including neighbouring Buckinghamshire, are likely to follow Oxfordshire’s lead by switching off their own speed cameras.
