UK Car Insurance - Tyre Checks Advised by Experts
07/07/2010
UK motorists have been advised to check their tyres before heading off on any long journeys this summer, according to experts TyreSafe.
UK car insurance customers have been encouraged by the organisation to not only ensure that the tyres pass the legal tread depth requirement but to ensure that they are adequately inflated, taking into account any additional, unexpected weight.
It is crucial that these checks are made before long trips to avoid potential tyre blow-outs and loss of control of the car which could lead to a potentially serious accident.
TyreSafe chairman, Stuart Jackson added: "If the warm weather we’ve recently experienced continues throughout the summer, we may see many more tyre-related incidents on our roads unless drivers check their tyres before setting off on holiday."
At present the minimum legal tyre tread depth stands at 1.6mm, and motorists should ensure that any borderline tyres are inspected and, if possible, replaced to avoid any potential confusion.
In fact, for safety reasons it is recommended that as soon as tyres wear down to around 3mm depth of tread they should be replaced as soon as possible.
